You may remember your child’s teething phase like it was yesterday. Now, only a few short years later, their baby teeth are making room for their permanent adult teeth — time really does fly!
On average, your child will begin to lose their baby teeth around age 6. However, every child’s experience is different. Some kids lose their first tooth as early as age 4, and others can start the process at age 8.
Whether your child is experiencing their first loose tooth or you are researching to prepare for the future, Sprout Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics can help.
When Is a Baby Tooth Ready to Come Out?
A baby tooth is ready to come out once its roots start dissolving and it begins to wiggle. The adult tooth replacement may also begin to grow beneath it. At this point, there isn’t much you can do, as the process of losing a tooth will happen naturally.
Most kids won’t have much discomfort, but the feeling of a loose tooth may bother them. Assure them that this occurrence is normal and that there is nothing to be afraid of to soothe any fear they may have.
If any soreness or discomfort is involved, using an ice pack or treating the pain with anti-inflammatory medication can help. You can also get the Tooth Fairy involved in the process to help your kid have a positive attitude.
After a tooth falls out, the gum may bleed. Swish your child’s mouth out with water, or have them bite down on a piece of gauze. If the bleeding continues for longer than an hour, contact your dentist.
Tips on Keeping Up Proper Dental Care
As your child begins the process of losing their baby teeth, it is important to reinforce proper dental care. Follow these best practices to keep your child’s teeth and gum health in tip-top shape:
- Encourage your child to brush their teeth at least twice daily — morning and night.
- Teach your child how to floss between their teeth each night. Supervise as needed.
- Avoid large amounts of sugar in food or beverages. If consumed, remember to brush well.
- Schedule regular dentist visits to ensure things are running smoothly.
